A venue full of personality.

In the heart of Mount Maunganui, Master Kong is an Asian-inspired restaurant and bar from Star Group, bringing street food, drinks and social dining together in a colourful, energetic setting.

From lanterns and bamboo to greenery, artwork and bold finishes, the restaurant has a personality all its own. It’s designed for plenty of occasions too, welcoming everything from casual drinks and date nights to shared meals, work lunches and group celebrations.

Our work with Master Kong has continued over the years, with commercial furniture supplied across different areas of the restaurant and additional pieces introduced as the venue has evolved.

Different spaces, one experience.

With a venue offering several ways to dine and socialise, the furniture needed to work across a variety of settings without taking away from the character that makes Master Kong distinctive.

Dining areas, bar-height seating and the outdoor Tiki courtyard each offer a different experience. Rather than creating a perfectly matched furniture scheme, the varied seating styles, heights, materials and colours help define these spaces while still feeling connected to the restaurant as a whole.

The challenge was less about making every area look the same and more about creating restaurant furniture that felt naturally at home among Master Kong’s layered interiors.

Furniture with character and flexibility.

Bar-height seating plays an important role throughout the venue, creating casual places where guests can gather for drinks, shared plates or a longer meal.

Within the original fit-out, Marseille bar stools in mocha, Cannes bar stools in pure black and colourful Tolix bar stools in yellow, green and red bring different materials and finishes into the mix. Paired with black Konus bar leaners and Solid oak table tops in dark oak, the combination adds warmth and variety while complementing the restaurant’s bold surroundings.

The experience continues outdoors in the Tiki courtyard. Karaka outdoor bar leaners in charcoal provide practical gathering points, paired with Frankie and Cannes bar stools to create relaxed settings for drinks and casual dining.

As Master Kong has evolved, additional furniture has been introduced to suit the changing venue. Idaho bar leaners in dark oak, paired with Fleur and Cannes bar stools, continue the mix of warm timber, dark finishes and varied seating that runs throughout the restaurant.

Together, these different pieces provide a flexible furniture solution without losing the personality of the space.

Made for gathering together.

The finished venue shows that a cohesive hospitality space doesn’t require every piece of furniture to match.

Warm oak, black metal, natural timber and bursts of colour each bring something different to Master Kong. Against the lanterns, bamboo, greenery and artwork, the varied furniture feels intentional rather than uniform, reinforcing the relaxed and energetic atmosphere.

More importantly, the furniture supports the way guests use the restaurant. Bar leaners create informal gathering points, varied stools provide seating across different areas, and the outdoor settings extend the experience into the courtyard.

As the venue has changed over time, the furniture scheme has been able to grow with it while maintaining the character established in the original fit-out.

The result is a restaurant designed around sharing, gathering and enjoying good company, with commercial furniture that supports the experience without competing with it.
